The exhibition of the Museum is based on the Meteorite Collection
and the Lunar Sample Collection of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Aboot 300 specimens of meteorites, tektites, and impactites
are exposed as well as a specimen of the lunar soil returned
by the Luna-16 mission.
The exhibition contains constructed in the Vernadsky
Institute devices for measuring chemical and isotopic compositions
of atmospheres and rocks at Venus, Mars, and Moon and the model
of the zond of the Mars-96 mission too.
The museum of Extraterrestrial matter catalogue
(only russian) consists 154 items.
The major topics of the display shows:
- the history of meteorite occurrences and impacts;
- stone meteorites (chondrites);
- stone meteorites (achondrites) and iron-stone meteorites;
- iron meteorites;
- impacts and tectites rock and glass from large meteorite
craters;
- equipment for remote investigation of the composition
of the atmosphere,
ground and other features of large planets.
The total area of the Museum is 36 sq.m (one room).
The Museum is visited by 350 visitors a year.
